Two Sisters, a Snapshot of Youth Culture Since 2006

Even as children, Christine and Sigrun Guggenberger were making magazines together — cutting images from other publications, writing stories and poems, assembling pages by hand. The foundation stone for c-heads was laid long before they knew what a masthead was. In 2006, the two sisters sat down with a friend in Vienna and decided to create an online magazine, back when that was still a novel idea. What started as a digital experiment quickly grew into a print-and-online platform that now reaches 300,000 readers from its twin bases in Vienna and Berlin.

The magazine is made by women — a fact stated plainly on the masthead, not as a marketing position but as a description of how the work gets done. Christine and Sigrun serve as editors-in-chief and creative directors, and the publication they’ve built covers photography, fashion, music, travel, sex, art, and youth culture with a visual language that is raw, intimate, and entirely uninterested in the glossy perfection that mainstream fashion media demands. The aesthetic is distinctly Berlin — unpolished, sensual, free from commercial constraints — even as the magazine’s Austrian roots keep it grounded in something warmer and less performatively cool.

Thirty-nine print issues in, c-heads has become a genuine launchpad for emerging talent. Photographers and models featured in its pages have gone on to work with major fashion brands and publications, but the magazine itself has never chased that kind of validation. Each issue is themed around a feeling or an idea — recent editions have explored “The Little Things,” the simple joys of a comforting word, a smile, an embrace — and the contributors are drawn from around the world, merging to create something that feels both global and deeply personal. The Guggenberger sisters once described themselves as dreamers and soul searchers, drawn to beauty and love. Nearly two decades of continuous publication suggests they found what they were looking for.
