Founded in 2008, DER GREIF is a registered non-profit and one of the most respected independent photography platforms in Europe. The project uses crowdsourcing to create accessible entry points for visual artists worldwide, and has published work from roughly 3,000 photographers in print, online, and in exhibitions — collaborating with FOAM, Aperture Foundation, C/O Berlin, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Haus der Kunst, and Pinakothek der Moderne.
The artistic core remains the annual ad-free print publication, now eighteen issues deep. Since issue ten, each edition has been guest-edited by a leading contemporary artist: Jason Fulford, Broomberg & Chanarin, Penelope Umbrico, Sylvie Fleury, Shirin Neshat, Torbjørn Rødland, and most recently Hank Willis Thomas. The Guest Room programme, launched in 2015, invites curators and editors to set submission frameworks that open doors for emerging artists.
With 68,000 Instagram followers, DER GREIF also runs Face-to-Face (portfolio reviews and mentorship) and Der Greif Studio (commercial pathways). In 2023, the fifteenth anniversary brought events at Pinakothek der Moderne, Photo London, Arles, Unseen Amsterdam, and Paris Photo. The name — German for the griffin — suits a platform that is part magazine, part community, part curatorial force, and wholly committed to the idea that the most important photography is often made by people nobody has heard of yet.
