Vienna's Bilingual Platform for Photography and Media Art

In 1991, art historian Carl Aigner founded EIKON as a quarterly journal devoted to photography and media art — a bilingual German-English publication that would serve as a platform for Austrian and international artists working across the still-emerging territory where fine art photography met new media. More than three decades later, the magazine continues to operate from the MuseumsQuartier Wien, one of the world's largest cultural complexes, published by the Austrian Institute of Photography and Media Art.

Each ninety-page issue pairs well-researched critical essays with extensive visual portfolios, produced in close collaboration with the featured artists. This intimacy extends to Edition EIKON, a programme of limited-edition, hand-signed original photographs by both established and emerging practitioners — an initiative designed to make quality art photography accessible to collectors at affordable prices. Since 2020, the EIKON Schauraum, a gallery space in the heart of the MuseumsQuartier, has hosted rotating exhibitions that open alongside each new issue, creating a rare fusion of print publication and physical exhibition programme.

Under editor-in-chief Nela Eggenberger, who has led the editorial team since 2013, EIKON has maintained its founding commitment to exploring the intermedial spaces between photography, video, and digital media. The result is a publication that feels both scholarly and visually generous — a journal for anyone who takes photography seriously as an art form and wants to follow the conversation as it unfolds across Europe and beyond.
