Sport, Music, Rebellion

In 2006, Vince Medeiros co-founded TCO London — originally called The Church of London — as an independent publishing house built on the idea that niche cultural interests deserved the same editorial ambition as mainstream media. One of the company's first projects was huck, a magazine rooted in the rebellious heritage of skateboarding and surfing but reaching far beyond either sport. Medeiros, who had previously edited surf publications including Surfing and Adrenalin, envisioned a publication for independent thinkers who happened to skate or surf but whose interests extended to music, politics, activism, and the broader world of counterculture.

Over nearly two decades, huck has evolved from its action-sports origins into one of Britain's most distinctive culture magazines. Guest editors have included Dave Eggers, Miranda July, Kim Gordon, and Cat Power. The magazine's journalism ranges from female roller derby leagues in Beirut to heavy metal scenes in Botswana, from graffiti crews in El Salvador to the frontlines of social activism in the UK. In 2015, Chronicle Books published Paddle Against the Flow, a book collecting insights from more than sixty people huck had profiled.

The Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt Design Museum included huck in its "Graphic Design — Now In Production" exhibition, and the magazine has won multiple awards for its dramatic documentary photography and on-the-ground reporting. TCO London, which also publishes the film magazine Little White Lies, has built a global network of freelance writers, filmmakers, and photographers who give huck its distinctive reach and authenticity.

Two decades in, huck remains exactly what it was at the start — a magazine about people who make things happen for themselves, told with the energy and commitment those stories deserve.
