nicht jetzt! — German for "not now!" — is a magazine made entirely by students of the Communications Design programme at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg). What makes it remarkable is the commitment to reinvention: there is a new layout for every edition, a new editorial concept for each issue, and every photograph and illustration is created by students of the department. The magazine is a permanent experiment, a publication that refuses to settle into a recognisable format because doing so would defeat the purpose.
The production process is itself a design challenge. Each new editorial team inherits no template, no house style, no predetermined structure — only a name and the freedom to do whatever they want with it. Recent editions have included extensive collaborations with the departments of fashion design and photography, demonstrating the magazine's ambition to work across disciplines rather than within them. nicht jetzt! treats the magazine format as a form to be reinvented with every issue, not a container to be filled.
The title is both a joke and a statement of intent. Not now — because the magazine is never the same thing twice, because what it was last time is not what it will be this time, and because the most interesting answer to any creative question is usually the one that has not been given yet.
