Born of Boredom, Built by Open Calls

The name is the Italian word for boredom, and the origin story is exactly what you'd expect: lockdown, isolation, the particular restlessness of creative people with nowhere to go. NOIA launched in 2021 as an independent, ad-free magazine that channels that restlessness into something structured and beautiful — each issue built around a central theme, explored through an open call for submissions from artists, designers, photographers, and writers around the world.

What makes the project unusual is its rotating creative infrastructure. For every issue, NOIA invites a visiting art director to join the small core team, helping define the theme, shape the visual identity, and craft the aesthetic from scratch. The result is a magazine that reinvents itself with every edition: Issue 01 tackled Absurd Rituals, Issue 02 explored Reassemblage, Issue 03 examined States — the conceptual and physical borders we construct to define ideas and assert control. Each runs to around 164 pages, offset-printed with open spine binding.

The project has since expanded into .objects, a spin-off producing eco-conscious design pieces in collaboration with independent designers. NOIA is both platform and laboratory — a publication that treats collective creativity as a counterweight to dominant narratives, and boredom as the spark that lights the whole thing.
