Scott Brady co-founded Overland Journal in 2006 with a clear goal: to provide independent equipment and vehicle reviews alongside the kind of adventure storytelling and photography that the general outdoor press couldn't match. The magazine carries a zero-advertorial policy — no advertiser compensation influences its reviews, ever. Brady himself has crossed all seven continents, circumnavigated the planet three times by 4WD and adventure motorcycle, led two vehicle crossings of Antarctica, and completed the first long-axis crossing of Greenland. The publication reflects that depth of experience on every page.
Published five times a year — a Gear Guide plus Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter issues — Overland Journal covers vehicle builds, gear reviews, route planning, backcountry cooking, and destination stories with a technical rigour that sets it apart. The team collectively represents over 350 years of combined overlanding experience across more than 140 countries. Parent company Overland International, which also produces the Overland Journal Podcast and the Expedition Portal website (the world's largest vehicle-dependent adventure community with over a million monthly visitors), is both employee-owned and veteran-owned.
What distinguishes the magazine from a pure gear publication is its insistence that overlanding is fundamentally about responsible travel. The tagline — the environment is the destination — was crafted by founding contributor Jonathan Hanson and has guided the editorial philosophy from the start. Brady, Hanson, and co-editor Graham Jackson together developed the widely adopted definition of overlanding as vehicle-based adventure travel, a formulation that has held for two decades.
