Standart was founded in 2015 with the aim of bridging the gap between the trade press that speaks to coffee professionals and the experience of the millions of people who simply love the drink, the culture that surrounds it, and the places where it all comes together. Four times a year, a 168-page magazine printed on FSC-certified paper arrives at the doorsteps of more than eleven thousand readers in eighty-four countries, accompanied by a sample of specialty coffee beans — because the editors believe a magazine about coffee should be read with a cup in hand.
The publication has been awarded Best Coffee Magazine four times at the Sprudgie Awards and was named Best European Indie Magazine at the 2023 European Publishing Congress. Each issue contains fifteen articles, stories, interviews, and essays that range from the historical and sociological to the scientific and cultural. A single issue might explore the colonial history shared by coffee and pepper, profile the executive director of the International Coffee Organization, investigate who actually invented the first espresso machine, and sit down with a Japanese electronic music duo to discuss what coffee sounds like. The approach is deliberately broad: for Standart, coffee is not an end in itself but a lens through which to explore the way we live.
The magazine is print-only, climate-neutral, proudly independent, and sold exclusively by subscription. It publishes in four language editions and has organised reader events in Moscow, New York, London, and Kyoto. In 2025, it celebrated its tenth anniversary with a 368-page hardcover book collecting the best of its archives. Reading Standart, the editors say, should feel like visiting your favourite café and striking up a chance conversation. It does.
