The Magazine You're Meant to Tear Apart

Most magazines ask you not to damage them. WRAP asks you to rip it open. Founded by designers Polly Glass and Chris Harrison in East London and launched during the 2010 London Design Festival, the publication was built on a single, brilliant idea: a magazine celebrating illustration and design that doubles as wrapping paper. Each issue contains five large, double-sided, perforated pull-out sheets — original artworks by commissioned illustrators, printed at a scale and quality that makes them genuinely usable for wrapping gifts, framing on walls, or simply admiring as prints.

Thirteen editions in, WRAP has collaborated with more than fifty illustrators from around the world, presenting their work through in-depth interviews, studio visits, and visual features alongside those signature pull-outs. The editorial voice is celebratory and warm, the production environmentally conscious — vegetable-based inks, FSC-certified and recycled paper, UK-based printers only. The magazine is available in more than eighty shops worldwide, including design museums in London and New York. A four-year hiatus ended with issue thirteen, themed around "Paradise," which featured French artist Marine Buffard on two front covers plus a limited-edition lenticular version, clear-varnish headlines, and gatefold pages that unfold to simulate diving into a swimming pool.

From the magazine, a broader design studio has grown: greeting cards, notebooks, art trays, cotton textiles, and hand-felted Christmas decorations made by a fair-trade women's cooperative in Nepal — all designed in collaboration with the illustrators the magazine champions. Harrison and Glass pay industry-leading royalties, a commitment that turns every card bought in a shop into a small act of support for independent artists. The print magazine remains the heart of the enterprise — a joyful, tactile object that proves a publication can be something you read, something you use, and something you give away, all at once.
