n+1 was established in 2004 in New York City by six young authors and editors who sought to resurrect the American heritage of politically active literary journals. The intellectual landscape seemed alarmingly fractured and devoid of energy at the time: political publications didn't care about literature, literary magazines didn't debate politics, and major ideas had to be hidden in small book reviews. The founding editors intended to create a magazine that could cover all of their interests—one that didn't shy away from tough and ambitious work and viewed literature, politics, and culture as all parts of the same enterprise.
